    A New Year at SHC!

Our Spring Programs kicked off in January! We welcomed over 180 students to our ESL program, and we saw such a large need for the Basic English class that we had to open a second section! We enrolled over 50 students in our GED program as well, as we are offering three different levels of Math and a Science class this semester. The SHC is offering transportation and children’s programs during both our morning and evening classes so that parents are able to attend classes. Registration for our Citizenship classes and Conversational Spanish classes began on February 4th. If you are interested in learning Spanish, we still have openings in both our basic and intermediate levels!

The Latino Leadership Institute began its second semester with 16 students in Charlottesville and 8 students in Richmond. This semester the focus is on preparing and making advocacy visits to Virginia legislators in support of legislation that benefits Latino families.

Our teen programs have expanded this year as well. Casa Lapiz, our middle school art program is starting again in March, with students from Boushall Middle School. Our ExcELL program for English Language Learner students started in early February, and has expanded from Meadowbrook High School to include a second group of students from Huguenot High School as well. Lastly, our College and Career Bound program is starting on February 13th with students from J.R. Tucker High School, so that English Language Learner students can gain exposure about educational and/or career opportunities after graduating high school. All three programs are run in conjunction with a partner teacher at the respective school and include transportation to and from Sacred Heart Center, as well as a healthy meal.

We also continue to provide our many Community Initiative services through our partner organizations at our location, such as food assistance, counseling, tax preparation, and much more!

We are excited that our community chooses the Sacred Heart Center to meet their educational goals, and are grateful for our dedicated staff and volunteers at Sacred Heart Center who work hard to make our programs a success!

    From the Executive Director

We have had a busy first few weeks of 2019 at Sacred Heart Center, welcoming back returning students, meeting new students, and kicking off all of our programs for the spring semester! Check out all that is going on in the description above!

In Latin America, February 14th is known as the Day of Love and Friendship, so on this Valentine’s Day, we celebrate love and friendship with family. We take a moment to reflect and to be grateful for our Sacred Heart Center family. We take a moment to be grateful that you are a part of our Sacred Heart Center family.

P.S. Be sure to read our latest Impact Statement to see how you have made a difference at Sacred Heart Center!

    Volunteer Spotlight

Humberto Macaiza, currently retired, volunteers with us here at his chosen home, the Sacred Heart Center. After years dedicated to how he describes "helping others" he now spends his days supporting his community in any way possible, especially during the arrival of students to their classes since Humberto is the one who receives them at the door with a big smile and a fraternal welcome. Humberto says that this fills him with happiness more than anything else in his life, when adults and children stop for a second to say “Buenos diás”.
