Position Overview

The Volunteer Engagement Coordinator is responsible for creating an environment for impactful and positive volunteer engagement at the Sacred Heart Center, thus providing meaningful opportunities for diverse people to further the work of the Center.

Key Responsibilities

The Volunteer Engagement Coordinator will have the following primary responsibilities:

Recruit, Place, and Support Volunteers and Engage Community Partners

  • Work with other staff to develop volunteer opportunities which meet Center needs
  • Recruit volunteers using VolunteerMatch and HandsOnRVA, as well as through other community networking opportunities; manage numerous monthly requests from people interested in volunteering; ensure continuous engagement with Latino community members for volunteer recruitment
  • Interview potential volunteers and give tours; train and onboard volunteers to Center mission, values, and needs; develop continuing education opportunities and provide ongoing support for volunteers
  • Maintain accurate volunteer profiles and service hours in Bloomerang database
  • Maintain volunteer orientation process and manual
  • Ensure volunteer background screenings and appropriate trainings required have been obtained to ensure compliance with Center and Catholic Diocese policies
  • Engage with partners and community by attending meetings, speaking to groups, and attending outreach and promotional events, and maintaining partnerships with area colleges and universities

Sustain volunteers

  • Survey volunteers to make sure their experience is satisfactory
  • Create a strategy to engage volunteers at all levels of our organization
  • Help staff work with volunteers, and ensure that supervisory roles are clear for each volunteer
  • Execute a robust volunteer engagement and appreciation strategy
  • Prepare reports with volunteer service hours
  • Ensure that all programs and volunteers are implemented and operating according to relevant policies and procedures
  • Complete all required reports as designated by funding sources

Other tasks

  • Be the point person for service project/done-in-a-day volunteers, including scheduling, planning, and logistics
  • Support additional administrative needs of office on an as-needed basis
  • Track and organize ongoing Center building needs in order to create tasks for volunteer groups and to improve the Center environment
  • Manage the donations room, the community garden, and their volunteers
  • Work as part of a team with other SHC staff to accomplish overall organizational goals

Experience and Attributes: 
Ideal candidates for this position will share our commitment to our mission and to our values of compassion, inclusion, equity, and collaboration, and have related experience, including: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum two years’ experience in a human service organization, especially working with volunteers
  • Ability to connect with others and forge strong relationships
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English, bicultural
  • Highly organized, analytical, IT-competent – proficient in Microsoft Office programs, the Google work suite, and ability to learn new programs as needed
  • Ability to perform several tasks concurrently and respond to concurrent demands from community members, staff, and others, and have time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to organize and maintain detailed records; complete necessary paperwork and meet deadlines
  • Exemplary record of strong communication skills and customer service focus, excellent follow-up, and an ability to work with diverse groups in a courteous and professional manner
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, and to work flexible a schedule, including occasional weekends, is preferred
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a commitment to and passion for SHC’s mission
  • Personal experience as a volunteer is a plus
