Position: Volunteer Engagement Coordinator

Position Overview

The Volunteer Engagement Coordinator is responsible for creating an environment for impactful and positive volunteer engagement at the Sacred Heart Center, thus providing meaningful opportunities for diverse people to further the work and mission of the Center. This is a full-time (40 hours/week) position.

Key Responsibilities

The Volunteer Engagement Coordinator will have the following primary responsibilities:

Recruit and Place Volunteers and Engage Community Partners

  • Collaborate with Program Coordinators and other staff to anticipate volunteer needs, identify volunteer opportunities which meet those needs, and ensure that volunteer needs are fulfilled in a timely manner
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive, year-round community engagement and volunteer recruitment strategy which includes using online networks such as HandsOn Greater Richmond, in-person community networking opportunities, social media, promotional events and presentations, and outreach to area businesses, civic groups, religious groups, and secondary schools and colleges
  • Serve as the point of contact for numerous monthly inquiries via phone and email from people interested in volunteering; interview potential volunteers, give tours
  • Ensure continuous engagement with Latino community for volunteer recruitment
  • Create a strategy to engage volunteers at all levels of our organization
  • Maintain and steward partnerships with area colleges and universities and other entities that place long-term volunteers with the Center
  • Maintain bilingual volunteer orientation process: train and onboard volunteers to Center mission, values, and identity; maintain and update bilingual volunteer manual
  • Collaborate with Program Coordinators to ensure that each volunteer’s skills, talents, and personality are matched appropriately with program needs
  • Ensure that required volunteer background screenings and trainings have been obtained to ensure compliance with Center and Catholic Diocese policies

Support and Sustain Volunteers

  • Execute a robust volunteer engagement and appreciation strategy
  • Help staff work with volunteers, and ensure that supervisory roles are clear for each volunteer; ensure that all volunteer duties are carried out according to relevant program needs, policies, and procedures
  • Develop continuing education opportunities and provide ongoing support for volunteers; survey volunteers regularly to ensure their experience is satisfactory
  • Maintain accurate volunteer profiles and service hours in Bloomerang database
  • Measure volunteer engagement: track number of active volunteers, satisfaction, retention
  • Prepare reports as required by funders, for internal use, and for impact evaluation

Other tasks

  • Work with Operations Coordinator to be the point person for service project/done-in-a-day volunteers, including scheduling, planning, and logistics
  • Work with Operations Coordinator to track ongoing Center building needs in order to create tasks for volunteer groups and to improve the Center environment
  • Work with Development Team, Operations Coordinator, and Program Coordinators to coordinate delivery of in-kind donations for adult, youth, or community programs
  • Work with Operations Coordinator to manage the donations room, the community garden, and their respective volunteers
  • Work as part of a team with other SHC staff to accomplish overall organizational goals

Experience and Attributes:

Ideal candidates for this position will share our commitment to our mission, identity, and to our values of compassion, inclusion, equity, and collaboration, and have related experience, including:

  • Bilingual in Spanish and English, bicultural
  • Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum two years’ experience in a human service organization, especially working with volunteers
  • Ability to connect with others and forge strong relationships
  • Highly organized, analytical, IT-competent – proficient in Microsoft Office programs, the Google work suite, Bloomerang volunteer management software, and ability to learn new programs as needed
  • Ability to perform several tasks concurrently and respond to concurrent demands from community members, staff, and others; time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to organize and maintain detailed records, complete necessary paperwork, and meet deadlines
  • Exemplary record of strong communication skills and customer service focus, excellent follow-up, and an ability to work with diverse groups in a courteous and professional manner
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, and to work a flexible schedule, including occasional weekends, is preferred
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a commitment to and passion for SHC’s mission and values
  • Personal experience as a volunteer is a plus
