Adults learn English or basic Spanish literacy while their children benefit from enrichment activities September to May on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 am to 12 pm. Transportation is available to students along the Jefferson Davis/Hull Street Corridor.
English as a Second Language
Sacred Heart Center offers 4 levels of classes with an emphasis on English language proficiency and cultural awareness. Along with biweekly classes, students are able to use the computer lab to fine-tune pronunciation and typing in English. VCU Nursing students teach medical words necessary to use during doctor and hospital visits using role-plays and presentations.
Spanish literacy group classes for adults that need to learn how to read, write and do mathematics in Spanish. This class is geared to Spanish or Mixteco speaking adults who have never been to school or did not complete many years of schooling.
Pasitos Exitosos: First Steps to Success
Young children of Family Literacy students attend a bilingual program aimed at school-readiness and social development. Children engage in songs, art, play and outdoor discovery.
Parenting classes in Spanish to learn about resources available to make sure their families are healthy and connected to educational opportunities from pre-school to college.
Cielito Lindo summer camp
Cielito Lindo is a bilingual summer camp serving Latino children ages 4-11. The camp allows kids from low-income families an opportunity to experience a wide range of fun and enriching activities for 3 weeks. The camp includes swimming, dance, art, soccer and science plus trips to local museums, gardens and parks. Activities help advance both English and Spanish language abilities and aim to build a sense of pride for their Hispanic heritage. Transportation is available for those living on the Jefferson Davis/Hull Street Corridor, and lunch and snack are provided every day!
College and career-bound programs
College and Career Bound is a program for Latino high school students to meet with mentors and learn about career choices as well as how to apply to college. Students meet bi-monthly to focus on resume writing, leadership skills, class choices, financial literacy, etc. Highlights include field trips to universities, businesses and SAT preparation.
