RICHMOND, VA – The community and staff of the Sacred Heart Center bids farewell to Executive Director Mary Thrower Wickham. Ms. Wickham led the Center’s work for the past five years. Sacred Heart Center serves as a hub for Richmond’s Latino community and works to open opportunities for economic and social integration, family success and community leadership. Ms. Wickham’s departure will be effective June 1, 2016.
“Under Mary’s leadership, the Center was re-born to be a trusted community space serving the needs of the growing Latino community in our area,” said Rev. Shay Auerbach, SJ, chair of the Board. “She helped us to discover our mission and worked successfully to launch new programming. The Center as it is today is testament to her amazing capacity as a leader to take an institution where it is being called to go. Her contributions will long be remembered.”
During her time as Executive Director, the Center achieved a number of significant milestones. This year alone, the Center delivered over 9,300 hours of instruction, enrolled over 650 students, and has involved 200 community volunteers. Significant increases in foundation, corporate, organizational, and individual support for the Center’s mission have also been achieved.
“It’s been a privilege to lead this organization and work with so many talented people,” said Ms. Wickham. “With the efforts of devoted volunteers, many community partners and investors, and a growing and talented staff, we have been able to build an organization that makes a real difference in people’s lives and can help lead our region to a brighter future.”
Sacred Heart Center engages a wide array of partners throughout the community in their work. “United Way is grateful to Mary for her leadership of the Sacred Heart Center the last five years,” said James Taylor, President and CEO of United Way of Greater Richmond and Petersburg. “We appreciate her passion and advocacy for the Latino Community in our region and her vision and energy which have helped to set the Center on a great path for the future. We wish her well in her next endeavor.”
The Board has convened a transition committee to identify and select the new executive director. Ms. Wickham will remain in her role until June 1, 2016.
“Mary’s legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of all the people she touched and welcomed to the Sacred Heart Center. Mary’s dedication to serving the Latino and Greater Richmond community will live through the dedicated staff who learned so much from such a passionate and amazing leader” said the staff of the Sacred Heart Center.
